Maryland Immigrants Pay Taxes

Both documented and undocumented immigrant Maryland residents pay federal, state, and local taxes at comparable rates to native-born Maryland residents.

Did you know that roughly 1 in 7 Maryland residents is an immigrant? Our immigrant neighbors are not only hardworking, they also greatly contribute to our economy.

In Maryland, immigrant-led households paid $6.1 billion in federal taxes and $3.1 billion in state and local taxes. Undocumented immigrants alone paid over $300 million in local and state taxes.

On average, each immigrant contributes nearly $120,000 more in taxes than he or she contributes in public benefits, a substantial net gain for the U.S. economy.

This net gain from immigrants’ contributions to national benefit programs like Social Security and Medicare help subsidize the benefits received by elderly U.S. citizens nationwide.
